Kurt Caz: The Man Who Turned Discomfort Into a Career

Who Is Kurt Caz?

Kurt Caz is a South African travel YouTuber, born in 1998 in Jeffreys Bay, with German roots. He has been posting travel videos since 2019, and he's known for going to the parts of a city the tourist board would rather you didn't film: border towns, rough neighbourhoods and islands with the word “mafia” in the thumbnail.

His thumbnails make every trip look like a hostage situation. The videos are mostly a cheerful guy in a straw hat eating street food and laughing at his own Spanish. It's like buying a horror film and getting a cooking show with the odd bit of shouting.

He's also the reason I fell in love with the Spanish speaking world, so consider this your warning: I like the man. I'm still going to roast him, because that's what you do with people you like.

Where Is Kurt Caz From?

Jeffreys Bay, a surf town on South Africa's Eastern Cape. He has German roots and used to live in Berlin. He has also called the city simply broken, and a Berlin newspaper put that in a headline, which is a bold thing to say about Berlin to the people who live in it. Most people wait until they're safely out of town before they insult it.

The travel bug bit long before the channel. In 2012 he went on a road trip with his father and brother through Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It had everything a family holiday shouldn't: 45 degree heat, an elephant strolling past the car window, lions roaring close enough that everyone dived back into the car, and a police stop at the Mozambique border with an expired licence and a request for a bribe. Most families get a flat tyre and a fight about the radio. The Caz family got a nature documentary and a crime drama in the same week.

He uploaded the footage in July 2020 and called it the greatest trip of his life. I think that trip is where Kurt Caz really comes from.

How Did Kurt Caz Get Famous?

Slowly, and then all at once in 2020. His first public videos came out in 2019 and were mostly Europe: Italy, Germany, Mallorca and detours to places like Bulgaria that most travel channels skip like the terms and conditions. Then came Egypt in late 2020, and the whole channel shifted into a higher gear.

A year of Europe, and what finally did it was a pyramid. Fair enough. The Colosseum never stood a chance against something that has been showing off for 4,500 years.

Why Does Kurt Caz Go to Dangerous Places?

Because that's where the real city is. The tourist version of a city is the one with the nice fountain and the twelve dollar lemonade, with all the interesting parts sanded off. Kurt will drive for hours to skip it. People say he films rough neighbourhoods for clicks, and sure, the clicks don't hurt. But filming a fountain is easy. Talking your way into a neighbourhood that doesn't want to be found is not.

What he's after is how people live. He wants to sit down with someone, eat what they eat and hear what they think. And now and then he wants to strap a wooden board to his boots and slide down an active volcano, which he did outside León in Nicaragua, laughing the whole way down. That isn't research. That's a man whose guardian angel has asked for a transfer.

Does Kurt Caz Speak Spanish?

Yes, and Portuguese too, and he learned both the hard way, on camera. He spent long stretches in Spanish speaking South America and later pushed on into Brazil. Watch his videos in order and you can hear his Spanish get better year by year. His early Spanish sounded like a sat nav that had been dropped in a swimming pool. His later Spanish holds a real conversation with a stranger. Then he added Portuguese, which is like finally learning to ride a bike and being handed a unicycle.

It's the best advert for learning a language that I know of. No classroom, no flashcards, just a man too stubborn to keep pointing at the menu.

Is Kurt Caz Racist?

Not from anything I've seen in years of watching him. He's conservative, that much is fair. But the media and a loud corner of the internet go a lot further than that, and words like racist get handed out like free samples at a supermarket.

He doesn't make it easy on himself. He has a streetwear brand called Conquest, a confrontational interview style and thumbnails that promise danger around every corner. A lot of those thumbnails also have a woman in shorts walking off somewhere, a trick every travel channel leans on these days. That's the persona, and it sells. But naming your clothing line Conquest and being surprised people find you intense is like naming your dog Killer and being surprised the postman won't come in.

Personas crack, though, especially over hundreds of hours of footage. What leaks through is a kind guy. He laughs easily, helps people without making a show of it and hangs out with everyone, whoever they are and wherever they're from. You can't fake that kind of laughter with a stranger you met ten minutes ago. Not for years, and not every single time.

The fair criticism is the London one. In late 2025 he was accused of doctoring a London thumbnail to make the city look more dangerous than it was. That deserves to be called out, and shock editing is a real problem in this genre. But a guy who oversells a thumbnail isn't the same as a guy who's hateful. Some corners of the internet paint him like Mussolini on a balcony, when the truth is a lot closer to a man who put his recycling out wrong one time.

Does Kurt Caz Have a Girlfriend?

Not that he has said lately, but he has had one. On a podcast he talked about his breakup with Marianny Dey, a Venezuelan woman who appears in his videos, including one filmed at her family's home in Petare, in Caracas. Other women show up in his videos too, some often and some once or twice. He's a grown man who travels for a living and meets new people every week. If he wasn't dating, I'd be worried about him. My last date ended with her asking if I'd be okay getting home on my own, so I'm in no position to judge anyone.

Why Kurt Caz Matters to Me

Kurt is a big part of why I fell in love with Spanish in the first place, and why the itch to travel never left me. Watching him fight his way through a language he wasn't born into, badly at first and then less badly, made the whole thing feel possible. I've been saving up for a camera for a while now, half hoping to go and do some version of what he does. So far I have the savings account and the dream. The camera is still in the shop, and so is the courage.

He's not a saint, and he's not the villain some people want him to be. He's a guy from Jeffreys Bay who kept traveling and built a career out of going where he's told not to.
