325 days. That is my longest Duolingo streak, a little orange owl on fire with the number stamped on its chest and a date under it: March 22, 2025. Today the flame at the top of my home screen is grey and says 0. I have thought about that gap more than I would like to admit, so here is everything I know about keeping a streak alive, and about what it is worth.
Your Duolingo streak counts the days in a row you finish at least one lesson. A streak freeze covers one missed day automatically, and you can hold up to 2 at a time. If you lose a streak, Duolingo may offer a streak repair for gems, and Super includes a monthly repair. Do one lesson early on busy or travel days and keep two freezes equipped, and you will almost never lose it.
In shortStreak rules that matter5 points
- One finished lesson a day is enough. Replaying an old lesson counts too.
- A freeze is used automatically on a day you miss. Keep 2 equipped.
- A repair brings a broken streak back, for gems or as part of Super, but only for a short time after you lose it.
- Friend Streaks with up to 5 friends are the strongest motivator Duolingo has measured.
- A streak measures showing up, not Spanish. Do not let it become the goal.
How the Duolingo streak works
Since 2020 the rule is simple: finish one lesson in a day and the streak grows by one. It used to require hitting your daily XP goal, and Duolingo found that dropping that requirement kept more people coming back. Replaying a lesson you already finished counts. So does a story. A half finished lesson does not.
When does the day end? Duolingo has no official page on it. Learners report that the cut-off is midnight in your phone's current time zone, and Duolingo's own travel advice is to do a lesson before and after a long flight. That is the rule I would follow too.
This is where the record lives: Profile, then Achievements. The longest streak is kept as a personal record with its date, so losing a streak does not wipe it. Mine sits next to my best league finish, number 2, from a summer when I cared far too much about leagues.
325 days is about 89 percent of a year. Close enough to taste the year badge. Not close enough to get it.

Streak freeze, repair, shield and friends: what each one does
Duolingo has built a whole little economy around protecting the streak. These are the tools, and what I could confirm about each. Prices in gems change often and differ between accounts, so I only list the ones Duolingo has published.
The streak toolkit
- Streak Freeze
- Covers one missed day, used automatically. Hold up to 2.Bought with gems in the shop, also earned from quests
- Streak Repair
- Restores a streak you just lost.Gems in the shop, and one a month with Super
- Streak Shield
- A newer, longer protection item.Duolingo has mentioned it, but not published the details
- Friend Streak
- A shared streak with up to 5 friends. Both do a lesson each day.Launched August 2024
- Outage protection

Streak freeze: how it works
A freeze sits in your inventory until you miss a day, then it is used up on its own. You have to have it equipped before the missed day, it cannot be bought afterwards. Duolingo says letting people hold 2 at once instead of one measurably raised the number of daily learners. Freezes do not expire, so the simplest habit in the app is to always keep the slots full.
Even the social feed sells freezes. Between a friend's sentence about urgently needing eggs and the likes under it, a card suggests spending gems on power ups like streak freezes and XP boosts.
Gems are not scarce. I have 2,289 of them from chests and quests without ever buying any. So gems are rarely the reason a streak dies. An empty freeze slot on the wrong day is.
Streak repair: getting a lost streak back
If the streak breaks, the app may offer to repair it. Duolingo's help pages say you can buy a repair with gems in the shop, and the App Store listing says Super includes a monthly streak repair. The window is short, so if you see the offer and want the streak back, take it the same day. After that, Duolingo has no official way to restore a streak, though it has made public exceptions, and in June 2026 it ran a Streak Revival event that let learners who once had a streak of 30 days or more restore their longest one by finishing three lessons. 15.4 million people did.
Streak shield and Streak Society
The Streak Shield is the newest item. Duolingo mentioned it in public in August 2026, when it restored a young learner's streak and threw a shield in as a gift, but it has not published what it costs or exactly how long it protects you. Learners describe it as a longer freeze. Streak Society is the club you join with a long streak, mostly for cosmetic perks like a badge and special app icons.
How to protect your streak when you travel or get busy
Tick these off before a trip, a hospital week, a move, or any stretch where your days stop being normal. They take two minutes and cover almost every way a streak dies.

What the streak does for your Spanish, and what it does not
Duolingo has good reasons to love the streak. Its own data says learners who reach a 7 day streak are 3.6 times more likely to finish their course, and people with a Friend Streak are 22 percent more likely to do their daily lesson. Over 10 million learners have kept a streak for a year or more.
But independent research on streaks in general found something worth knowing: once a streak becomes a goal of its own, breaking it makes people more likely to give up altogether. That matches what I see in learner forums.
What the streak gave me
- A daily habit, which is the hardest part of learning anything
- Spanish on days I would otherwise have skipped
- A small, real sense of pride every morning
What it cost me
- Lessons done for the number, not for the Spanish
- Easy replays to save the day instead of new material
- Guilt as the reason I opened the app
- A strong pull to quit when it broke
The longest Duolingo streak in the world
Streak features change often and Duolingo tests different versions on different accounts. Check the shop in your own app. More in the disclaimer. For whether a long streak means you are learning, see is Duolingo effective?
